Location Profile:

Headquartered in Irvine, CA, Shur-Lok manufactures fastening systems with superior locking devices for critical requirements, including engine module assembly, structural assembly, rotor blade attachment, and aircraft engine shaft and spindle applications.  Operations at the Irvine location include CNC Machining, CNC Waterjet Cutting, Laser Marking, Heat Treating, NDT, and EDM.

Position Summary:

Under supervision the Experimental Machinist “B” will use formal and informal blue prints, to fabricate prototype components and assemblies. Set-Up and operate CNC lathes, as well as set-up and operate manual lathes and mills. Needs to know operation of standard machine shop equipment and have the ability to read and interpret manufacturing drawings.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Under supervision, perform testing, and basic assembly using formal and informal blueprints.
  • Assist in fabricating prototype components and assemblies. Must be capable of learning CNC Lathe, conventional Mill, and Engine Lathe operation.
  • Must be willing to learn CAD software and operate any new type of machinery as needed. Generate test reports and procedures.
  • Aid and assist in product re-work, evaluation, and sorting processes.
  • Level one responsibilities apply to level two, with the following additional duties:
  • Perform basic setup operations, including fixtures, cutting tools, and CNC programs.
  • Maintain product quality by monitoring and adjusting CNC offsets as needed.
  • Perform inspection tasks of intermediate complexity interacting with drawings and more advanced inspection tools.
  • Meets production demands.
  • Run production on multiple machines at once. (Primary & Secondary)
  • Perform sets up and operate a wide variety of machine shop equipment.
  • Performs basic set up of equipment, according to work instructions.
  • Must follow company mandated safety procedures and practices.
  • Produces parts in accordance with production rates and quality standards.
  • Ability to utilize proper tool selection while working with a variety of exotic steels and alloys such as A286, Inconel 718, 4340, Titanium.
  • Must have ability to use standard machine shop practices, and machining methods for an assigned job.
  • Securely assembles cutting tools in tool holders and positions tool holders in machine spindles and turrets as required, inserts cutting tools in specified machine magazines accurately.
  • Familiar with CNC (G-code), Manual Data Input (MDI), the Cartesian Coordinate system, and able to manipulate machine controls in order to teach relative machine tooling positions in machine tool library.
  • Measures work piece for conformance to specifications.
  • Document measurements to inspection plan.
  • Familiar with basic Statistical Process Control (SPC) methods and documentation.
  • Under supervision, conduct product testing on a routine basis.

Required Skills:

  • Must be able to work a flexible work schedule.
  • Able to learn and use hand tools and precision measuring instruments.
  • The ability to identify and correctly load and secure fixtures with minimal assistance.
  • Machine Set Up –.Demonstrate the ability to set up CNC machines without assistance, including: basic loading program; selecting and installing cutting tools; selecting and setting appropriate feeds and speeds; checking and maintaining machine coolant; selecting and installing special attachments. Identify machine malfunctions and inform supervisor of any errors.
  • Mathematical Skill – Demonstrate the ability to apply mathematical operations to validate, analyze variance, and correlation techniques.
  • Blueprint Reading & Interpretation Demonstrate the ability to reliably read and interpret the following: drawing terms; call outs; symbols and/or descriptions; types of lines; front view; side view; top view; section view; types of radii; tolerances (min. and max.); external/internal thread; surface finish; fastener-related specifications.
  • Basic Visual & Dimensional Inspection Demonstrate the ability to inspect parts reliably using the following tools: caliper (dial and digital); micrometer (stand, blade, and disk); dial drop indicator; test indicator; comparator; pin gage; gage block set; any functional gages applicable to the operator. Ability to use hand tools and measuring instruments.
  • Workmanship – Demonstrate the ability to identify and take appropriate action to prevent, correct, or reject the following conditions on die and tools parts: cracks; nicks, scratches and dents.
  • Communication – Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with team members to achieve cooperation and assistance needed to resolve problems and attain maximum productivity.

Required Experience:

  • A working knowledge of G and M codes applied in setting and adjusting offsets and interacting with CNC programs.
  • A working knowledge of shop math, including tool geometry, positive and negative numbers, and basic geometry.
  • The ability to read basic prints and apply basic dimensional specifications to inspection processes.
  • 3 years minimum related CNC lathe, mills and set-up with 3 – 4 years in a design prototype environment.  
  • Knowledge of machines sequence of operation and application of that knowledge in set-up tool selection.
  • Basic CNC Programming.
  • Must have knowledge of shop practices and procedures, ability to read and interpreter Y14.5 blueprint and ability to use hand tools and measuring instruments.
  • Attention to detail and an attitude of 100% compliance with all company and regulatory requirements.
  • High energy level and ability to work flexible hours.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Able to set up and operate computer numerical control lathe, mills.

Desired Skills:

  • Self-motivated individual who can work independently as well as work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, blueprints and procedure manuals.  
  • Knowledge of shop practices and procedures.

For informational purposes only, the range of pay for this role is $23.50 to $35.25 US Dollar (USD) Hourly based on a variety of factors.  For informational purposes only, this role is eligible to participate in the Company’s Quarterly Cash Bonus Plan, paid out at the quarterly bonus factor of 1X the Company’s bonus multiple, based on the Company’s performance in the applicable quarter. Employees will receive 80 hours paid time off every year. Employees will also receive 10 paid holidays.
