A former Wyman Gordon casting house, this Connecticut facility specializes in large steel and superalloy components for industrial gas turbine and aero-engine components.  Located in Groton Connecticut near picturesque Mystic and just two hours from Boston and New York City.

PURPOSE:

Works under close supervision following established procedures, performs all required operations form media blasting, chemical etching and passivation processes for a wide variety of castings following established methods and procedures.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Sets up and operates all media blasting equipment such as hand, tumble, short blast and water blast to remove surface contaminants and import proper surface finish to castings.
  • Sets up and operates chemical processing tank of ferric chloride etch, and passivation following established procedures.
  • Monitor and log environmental readings and indications from process instruments.
  • Maintains daily log books for specific jobs and part numbers.
  • Operate mechanical lifts and hoists and forklifts as required. Conducts regular hoist inspections in area.
  • Measures parts for dimensional characteristics using standard measurement equipment. Inspects parts for required surface treatment results.
  • Follows established procedures for handling and disposal of all hazardous material and solutions. Operates pumping equipment and labels drums hazardous waste per HazMat requirements.
  • Cleans and prepares tubs for new chemical setups. Inspects equipment to ensure proper and safe operation.
  • Follows all safety procedures and policies. Maintains work area in clean and orderly manner.
  • Troubleshoots equipment as required and performs minor maintenance operations to optimize efficient operation.
  • Assists maintenance personnel, as required in hazardous waste clean-ups.
  • Follows HazMat procedures.
  • Maintains annual HazMat certifications.
  • Performs other functions as assigned to meet production throughput requirements.

 

 SPECIAL SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Must properly know how to mix the Acid baths required per specifications.  Must properly now how to fill out required test material forms.
  • Must be respirator trained
  • Must know how to properly handle acids. 
  • Continuous mental or visual attentions in necessary.
  • Checking, setting up and performing other related duties involving constant alertness and activity.
  • Material handing safety is of the utmost importance due to the nature of the material
  • Requires the use of judgment to determine and perform on various sizes and shapes of cast parts. 
  • Checking work to close tolerance, avoid over chem. mill and excessive heat or cracking.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports to the Finishing lead person and the Finishing supervisor.

 

EDUCATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Use of ordinary arithmetic, decimals, and fractions.  Work form simple drawings, specifications and technique cards.  Use scale, micrometers and various gauges.

 

 

• Work from melt log, schedules operation and other instructions to pour molds for any Company product part(s).
• Comply with established procedures and/or special instruction in the loading of ovens with shells and flasks.
• Maintain proper temperatures; pull flasks or shells for pouring; position.
• Perform other preparatory operations as specified check temperature, skim and pour: dispose of as instructed.
• Exercise care in pouring operations to comply with specified procedures and practices; avoid damages, non-fills, or injuries through mishandling. Take sample of melt and tag.
• Maintain melting pot and crucibles, repatch and replace as necessary. Maintain ladles and set aside for knock-out and ram operations.
• Perform cleaning maintenance of ovens, notify supervisor of any unusual conditions.
• Detect and report improper operation and unusual conditions to proper supervision. Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition. Follow prescribed safety regulations.
• Constant care necessary to prevent injury to others, due to the inherent hazards of the job
• Performs a variety of other duties and tasks of equal or less complexity as assigned by supervisor.
• Keep the work area clean and orderly
6 months to one year foundry experience preferred
High School Diploma/GED
• Use ordinary arithmetic, decimals and fractions. Make simple use of schedules and specifications, requiring interpretation of forms, records and comparable data
• Heavy physical demand consisting of frequently lifting or moving average weight materials, pouring molds, handling dewaxing flasks and performing other duties
• Continuous mental and visual attention in checking, pouring performing other related duties.
