PURPOSE:

Install, repair, and maintain all types of electrical machinery, equipment, and facilities throughout the entire plant.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

  • Receive job assignments form supervisor or leader.
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain electrical part of all machinery and equipment in plant.
  1. Includes all forging, trimming, and saws, die sinking machines, numerical control machines, welders, cranes, furnaces, laboratory and research equipment, door operators, elevators, substations, generators, etc.
  2. Study electrical drawings, manuals, and parts lists, analyze defective operation and make necessary repairs including repair or replacement of necessary parts.
  3. Rewire or make necessary alterations to existing electrical circuits to fit specific needs for machine or equipment operation.
  • Do all necessary electrical work for installation of any kind of machinery or equipment, including such items as substations and data process equipment.
  • Perform any required electrical work in installation of new buildings and facilities or rebuilding, changing, and maintaining of existing facilities.
  • Make preventive maintenance inspections on equipment as required, doing minor repairs on spot, and listing any work that should be done to prevent breakdowns or improper operation.
  • Rebuild electrical and electronic equipment such as solenoid coils, switches, contactors, relays, radios and all types and sizes of motors.
  • Use variety of testing equipment to check for load, voltage, grounds, leakage, etc.
  • Design and make parts for specific jobs.
  • Repair and maintain small tools and equipment.
  • Instruct Electrician II and helpers as required.
  • Required to have Electrician’s Journeyman’s license.
  • Perform any other laboring and cleaning duties in the plant as directed by supervisor

 

KNOWLEDGE AND TRAINING:

Requires four years of on-the-job training to be first-class electrician.  Trade school background helpful.  Should complete shop course in electronics.  Must be able to read and interpret drawings.  Must keep abreast of new developments in field.

SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires considerable initiative, judgment, and ingenuity.  Works independently and devises own methods in a variety of complex repair and installation work.
  • Frequent use of first-class skills in repairs and installation of any electrical equipment and facilities.
  • High degree of finger dexterity.
  • Uses variety of testing equipment and electrician’s tools. 
  • Sometimes works in awkward position at hard-to-reach places.
  • Must exercise considerable care in electrical inspection and repair work to avoid nonproductive time for number of employees and equipment.
  • Constant care and attention required in electrical work to avoid causing serious injury to others.
  • Frequent physical effort required. 
  • May be required to climb and work anywhere in plant. 
  • Some jobs require visual attention.
  • Has use of materials handling aids for heavy lifting.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS AND POSSIBLE HAZARDS:

  • Constant use of hands and hand tools.
  • Works in all areas of shop. 
  • Frequently works at heights such as on girders, cranes, or ladders. 
  • Some outside work.
  • Exposed to heat, dirt, and noise.
  • Infrequent exposure to permanently disabling injuries when working on substation and other hi-voltage equipment.
  • Subject to electrical shocks on many jobs.
