Position Summary

Under minimal supervision, sets up and operates computer numerical control lathes, mills and machining centers to cut, shape, or form metal work pieces to specification by performing the following duties:

Primary Responsibilities

  • Produces parts in accord with production rates and quality standards.
  • Performs basic set up of equipment, according to instruction sheets, set-up procedures.
  • Manipulates controls and enters commands to index cutting tool to specified set point and to start machine.
  • Observes and listens to machine operation to detect malfunctions such as worn or damaged cutting tools.
  • Replaces and adjusts cutting tools, as needed.
  • Grinds work tools to meet production requirements.
  • Removes metal chips from tools and equipment and disposes of them in the proper container.
  • Measures work piece for conformance to specifications.
  • Changes cutting tools and location of work piece during machining process to achieve desired result
  • Measures work piece for conformance to specifications
  • May hand Deburr or sand parts, as needed.
  • Performs housekeeping tasks to maintain a clean and orderly workstation and performs basic machine upkeep, such as wiping down outside surface of machine, lubrication, etc.

 Minimum Education or Experience

  • At least 3 years related CNC lathe or mill experience or equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Must have basic knowledge of shop practices and procedures, ability to read blueprints, and ability to use hand tools and measuring instruments.
  • Some knowledge of materials, tool wear, and tool geometry and tool sequence.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, blueprints and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine data on routers and SPC charts.
  • Ability to use math skills to solve problems.
