Senior Automation Engineer assists in the creation of automated systems for use in a production manufacturing environment, and long term strategy development for use of automated systems across the business. Uses a project methodology to develop a project from idea through acceptance process, including part flow, equipment layout, part lists, specifications, and timelines for implementation. Collaborates with departmental, division and corporate leadership to determine existing automation capabilities and future opportunities, creating detailed project road maps for automation projects that support business objectives.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Conduct research into the feasibility, design, and operation of automated systems for manufacturing processes using factory layout and discrete event simulation software for automated systems.
  • Use of non-contact inspection systems and equipment to further the quality systems across departments, divisions, and the corporation.
  • Create models and layouts while updating model libraries, factory layouts, and process equipment.
  • Create and simulate tooling designs and automated tooling concepts as needed to support technology roadmap initiatives.
  • Develop new process maps, process requirements, and system specifications to govern the functionality, testing, and qualification of new automation equipment and systems.
  • Provide technical training to production for successful transition of new automation systems from engineering to production.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation for automation systems. This includes but not limited to, process control procedures, work instructions, and training materials, electrical/mechanical drawings, and other system documentation as necessary.
  • Identify and address safety considerations using industry standards throughout the system
  • Develop training materials for new and existing automation systems used in the manufacturing process.
  • Direct ownership of cost savings projects defined by direct report including project milestones and metrics, project reports and updated department metrics.

Required Skills:

  • 5+ years of experience in the use of non-contact structured light systems and associated point cloud processing software including Polyworks and GOM Inspect for advanced manufacturing methods development.
  • 5+ years of CAD background using AutoCAD, Solidworks, NX, and CATIA with an emphasis on mechanical systems, systems and factory design, and reverse engineering.
  • Experience with automated inspection systems including 2D and 3D dimensional inspection systems.
  • Experience validating complex systems involving hardware, software, and mechanical components.
  • Solid engineering background with hands-on design and experience.
  • Proven analytical, problem solving, and process improvement ability.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and accountability for assigned projects.

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Demonstrated record of long-term, multi-year projects with short-term, high-pressure projects.
  • Ability to learn quickly while working individually and/or contributing to team initiatives.
  • Ability to move projects from theoretical to actual including calculate financial benefit of projects. manage vendor relationships. Ability to interact with customers.
  • Demonstrated record of time management of multiple projects and prioritization of projects based on impact to the Division.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated record of successfully coordinating and communicating with teams to complete projects on time and within budget.
  • Six Sigma Training- as demonstrated by the achievement of a “belt” or completed projects towards the completion of a “belt”.
  • Proficiency in Statistical Programs such as Minitab, Statistica.
  • Ability to investigate new solutions while also providing technical know-how and guidance on direct projects.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite.

Qualifications:

  • Requires MS degree in Engineering Science with 3-5 years’ experience in Mechanical Design, OR equivalent experience. Technical degree preferred.
  • Requires 3-5 years’ experience in non-contact inspection systems, scanning, reverse engineering, and 3D data analysis.
  • Broad general knowledge of factory automation and investment casting technology.
  • Proven history of knowledge and demonstrated ability in engineering principles and disciplines; employed manufacturing processes, technical report and article preparation, specification preparation; ability to define, plan and complete major projects, ability to supervise/ direct/ coordinate activities of professionals with diverse expertise.
  • Proven history of excellent communication skills both verbal and written. Capable of interacting with various levels of the organization. Must demonstrate a high degree of objectivity and integrity in the evaluation of people and problems.
