MISSION:

To chemically remove titanium stock from castings and prepare castings surfaces in order to met customer specifications.  To accurately prepare, operate and maintain tanks used for chemical milling of all titanium castings and revert metal.

 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1.  Casting Preparation

Objective: to measure and inspect castings prior to milling which may require working with hazardous waste.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Reviews Technique Cards and paperwork.
  2. Visually inspects castings for core material, scale, sand and other contaminants; may reject parts for chemical milling and reroute for cleaning.
  3. Measures specified areas on castings using dimensional measuring devices and/or Ultrasonic Thickness testing equipment to determine amount of stock to be removed; records measurements.

 

2.  Chemical Bath Preparation

Objective: to take samples of chemical baths, make corrections, neutralize, pump and build baths prior milling to assure conformance to process control specifications; to test tank pumping systems prior to operation.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Checks daily lab analysis to determine if bath chemistry is within specification ranges; checks bath temperature.
  2. Calculates etch rate using standard formula.
  3. Adds acid to bath in order to bring chemistry up to specifications, using standard formulas; adjusts surface tension as needed.
  4. Checks operations of circulation pumps; checks for leaks; troubleshoots and reviews pumping diagrams if needed.
  5. Pumps spent tank solutions to neutralization facility; cleans and rinses tanks.

 

3.  Chemical Mill Operation

Objective: to submerge castings in baths and mill according to specified procedures.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Submerges castings in chemical tanks using tumblers, fixtures and hoists; submerges castings into a nitric-hydrofluoric acid solution in accordance with Process Control Procedures.
  2. Monitors milling operations; calculates etch rate and modified bath times accordingly.
  3. Removes masking tape; places dried parts on pallets.
  4. Removes castings, rinses and transfers to drying ovens.

 

4.  Completes logs and records, including measurements, calculations, chemical additions and milling times.


5.  Meets all production and quality standards.


6.  Safety:

 Objective: to take responsibility for and demonstrate safe work practices.

 

NOTE:  for job positions that require respiratory protection (more than a filtering face piece – dust mask):

 In compliance with the Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division Personal Protective Equipment standard for Respiratory Protection, OAR 437, Div. 2/I 1910.134 and Oregon Health Division Rules for the Control of Radiation, OAR 333. Div. 120 (333-120-300 through 330), certain tasks within this job position require/may require the use of a NIOSH-approved respirator.  An individual will not be assigned to these tasks if the person is not able to work under these conditions.  Respirator selection will be based on the work performed, exposure information, duration of use and any other relevant factors.  If a tight-fitting respirator is required, facial hair, temple pieces on glasses or other items that interferes with the face-to-face piece seal of the respirator are not permitted.

 Essential Job Functions:

  1. Adheres to plant and department safety rules.
  2. Safely operates all equipment and tools.
  3. Identifies and reports safety problems.
  4. Wears personal protective equipment, including respirators during acid bath additions.

 

OTHER (MARGINAL) ACCOUNTABILITIES

 Performs other tasks as directed.

 

EQUIPMENT, VEHICLES, TOOLS AND/OR MACHINERY USED:

  1. forklift
  2. pallet jacks
  3. dimensional measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, ultrasonic thickness gauge, etc.)
  4. hoist (radio controlled)
  5. chains and straps
  6. drying oven
  7. drying screens

 

TRAINING

  1. Training is provided on the job.
  2. PCC's Forklift Driving Safety Training must be completed.
  3. PCC's Hazardous Chemical Safety Training must be completed.
  4. Completion of a basic chemistry course preferred.

 

 QUALIFICATIONS

1.  Three to six months prior chemical handling experience, experience with dimensional measuring devices, and previous chemistry courses are all preferred.

                 OR

      An equivalent combination of classroom training and work experience.

2.  Ability to read, interpret and follow instructions on safety manuals, Process Control Procedures, Technique Cards and bath analysis.

3.  Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations. (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and decimals)

 4.  Ability to effectively communicate verbally.

 5.  At least 20/30 corrected vision.

 6.  Ability to work independently with limited supervision.

 7.  Physical ability to perform the essential job functions.
