Screw Machine Operator Job Description

Screw machine operators perform a variety of tasks in their work with one or more multiple-spindle, automatic lathe-type screw machines. These machines are used to produce custom parts from stock metal or other materials. Screw machine operators ensure the machine is properly set up to perform the various operations needed to produce these parts. Operators read blueprints and determine exactly what screw machine settings are needed to create an actual working part from the plans. The operator chooses cutting speeds, the depth of cuts, how fast the machine should run and which cutting tools should be used for each operation. Operators base their decisions on experience, knowledge about the materials being used and basic mathematic principles.

Job Duties

Operators install and adjust cams, gears and stops to the screw machine and verify the positioning of cutting tools by using gauges or other instruments. Operators are responsible for turning the machine on and off according to safety protocols. During an operation, operators carefully monitor the screw machine, making changes to speed, feed rates or tool position to ensure accurate reproduction of the plans. After a sample part has been produced, screw machine operators verify that the part meets specifications of the blueprints by using a variety of tools, such as calipers and micrometers.

Other Responsibilities

Operators are responsible for labeling finished products and keeping track of materials used during production; they may be required to submit records regarding productivity and operation quality.

In addition, screw machine operators perform regular maintenance or repair on the screw machine, such as replacing work parts or using other machines to sharpen tools. Some jobs require screw machine operators to have experience with a particular brand of screw machine. An operator's job performance is evaluated according to their mastery of a variety of tools, the complexity of a particular job and the quality of the final product.

Screw machine operators require mathematic and mechanical abilities, as well as the ability to read blueprints.

Principal Activities

  • Plan and perform gear checking for inspection purposes.
  • Set up and operate machine for lapping gears, select proper tooling, perform operations to bring gears to specified close tolerances.
  • Maintain close tolerances. Perform related bench functions, such as, deburring, cutting splines, honing, marking part numbers, countersinking, drilling, etc. Change and replace dull or broken tools as required.
  • Perform dynamic balancing of single and multiple rotors, propellers, impellers, screws, rotating elements, timing gears and sub contract elements as required up to capacity of machine.
  • Setups require selection and the use of various bushings and arbors, including expansion arbors on which the parts to be balanced are securely mounted.
  • Maintain balancing machines and tooling.
  • Lubricate and perform minor maintenance functions.
  • Setup, write programs, and operate Bridgeport. Setups are regular requiring use of multicut tools and universal chucks. Make up special holding fixtures or turn chuck jaws as required.
  • Run multiple machines or operations simultaneously.
  • Operate cutoff saw to prepare raw material for machining operations in the navy manufacturing cell classification.
  • Perform diversified mechanical duties including cutting splines and/or honing to close tolerances, duties include setup and operation of machines reading complicated prints and specifications using precision measuring instruments and other similar duties in the bench functions
  • Perform various setups for multiple types of machine parts.
  • Participate in bench assembly operations as work load requires. Perform various grinding, deburring, tapping, tap burning reaming, etc., to obtain proper fit, alignment and/or operation of items. Operate various hand tools, drill presses, tap burner, etc.
  • Remove burrs on all machined parts.
  • Detect and report defective materials and faulty operations to proper supervisor. Follow all safety rules, procedures and practices. Maintain work area in clean and orderly manner.
  • Record labor times and other related data on standard forms.
  • Record all required data on Process Control Sheets including finished dimensions checked, measuring instruments used, serial numbers, etc.
