The Quality Engineer is responsible for facilitating and organizing the various actions needed to meet the quality standards of Special Metals Corporation. The Individual is responsible to facilitate the specification
review process, perform the QE portion of contract review, serve as the QE representative for Wavefront systems, assist with export/import compliance, perform internal audits, and participate in continuous
improvement projects. Individual must become cross trained in all aspects of the department’s responsibilities and participate in ongoing trainings. Must demonstrate knowledge of quality assurance procedures.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Specification Review Process SMC utilizes a combination of customer and society issued specifications to communicated purchase order requirements. The specification requirements have to be disseminated among various SMC disciplines, accepted for incorporation into test plans or communicated to the customer that there is a requirement exception which needs negotiated mutual concurrence.

The process involves:
• Loading specifications into the Lotus Notes system to allow distribution
• Reviewing the specification from a Quality Engineering perspective
• Coordinate the responses from multiple SMC disciplines
• Work with various disciplines to document specification exceptions, comments or interpretations for customer notification.
• Where required notify customers of specification review status
• Provide final disposition of the specification status in Lotus Notes
• Maintain current specification status in Oracle
• Accessing customer portals to retrieve specification documents 

Ability to Understand and gain competence in:
• Vendor Agreement knowledge
• Specification knowledge
• Process and product knowledge Contract Review The SMC Contract Review process utilizes a multi-disciplined work flow process. The responsible QE contract administrator reviews the customer PO for specifications (including revisions, conflicts and relevancy), abnormal terms and conditions, vendor agreement requirements, potential export/import compliance issues and identifies statements/requirements which pose a risk to SMC’S reputation, profitability or customer perception.
• Attend weekly Contract Review meetings
• Prioritize reviews based on sales/delivery requirements
• Advise and assist other SMC disciplines to resolve issues QE Representative for Wavefront SMC is implementing new specification control system which will touch or impact Order Entry, the Laboratories and Quality Assurance (certifications).

The role of this position is to:
• Ensure Quality Engineering requirements are captured, accessible and functioning
• Where required load and maintain data for system requirements
• Create and actively maintain all documentation associated with the Wavefront system as it relates to Quality Engineering Assistant Facility Compliance Officer. SMC utilizes domestic and international material suppliers and has a worldwide customer base which requires that we adhere to all U.S. regulations concerning export/import requirements. The Assistant Facility Compliance Officer (AFCO) will be required to understand our export/import requirements, assist the Facility Compliance Officer (FCO) and provide back-up support in their absence.• Assist FCO with non-disclosure agreement logging
• Assist FCO with companywide export training
• Assist FCO with internal documentation
• Assist FCO with preparation for yearly export/import audit
• Acquire and stay current with all required training

Perform Internal audits – AS9100 & SWI
• SMC performs various audits on a quarterly and annual cycle. The Quality Engineering role is responsible to perform these audits on time and in a professional manner.
• The auditor must be able to audit at all levels of the organization from management to the hourly workforce and in some instances where the need is required off-shift hours. 

Continuous improvement projects
• SMC relies on a continuous improvement mindset to achieve performance goals. All employees are expected to participate either with ownership or as a member of a continuous improvement project assigned by management.


Cross training
• It is expected that all Quality Engineers over time become cross trained in all aspects of the department’s responsibilities in order to build department strength and provide for individual growth.


Training
• Training is fundamental to the success of the Quality Engineering Department. At a minimum the following training is required or to be attained upon hire:
• Laboratory Control Source
• Certified Quality Auditor
• Import & Export Compliance

Complete various assignments and duties as directed by management.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A Bachelor’s degree in a Technical or Science field and at least two years of quality related job experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Knowledge of aerospace material specifications, aerospace quality standards and quality systems is preferred. Employee must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform certification function, system knowledge and core competencies
within 6 months of employment.

PHYSICAL DIMENSIONS

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: THE EMPLOYEE WILL FREQUENTLY MOVE ABOUT THE PRODUCTION FACILITIES, BOTH IN THE NEW
HARTFORD AND DUNKIRK LOCATIONS. INFREQUENT TRAVEL WILL ALSO BE A REQUIREMENT TO ACHIEVE REQUIRED
COMPLETION OF AUDITS AND FULFILL TRAINING REQUIREMENTS.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT REQUIRES THE EMPLOYEE TO MAINLY WORK IN AN OFFICE SETTING,
HOWEVER EXPOSURE TO THE PRODUCTION FACILITIES BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE IN YEAR ROUND CONDITIONS IS NOT
UNCOMMON. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) WILL BE REQUIRED AS APPROPRIATE TO THE SPECIFIC AREA.
