The Melt Shop Supervisor supervises Melt Shop hourly and non-exempt salary production personnel and operations on the assigned shift.  

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead train, supervise and coach assigned personnel.  Use positive reinforcement and discipline as appropriate.  Complete annual performance appraisals and quarterly (new employee) evaluations.
  • Issue work assignments to Lead Operators, Furnace Crews, Finished Product Technicians, Set-Up Technicians and other employees as appropriate to meet department objectives.
  • Assist Lead Operators with planning work and use of resources (people, tools, and equipment) to maximize the efficiency and quality of the work performed.  Also, supervise personnel to achieve throughput, delivery performance, and changeover and product yield goals.
  • Delegate assignments and responsibility to the Lead Operators.  Follow-up to be sure assignments are completed properly and productively.
  • Allocate resources (people, tools, equipment, and materials) between furnaces and support activities (maintenance, set-up, grit blasting, conditioning and packaging, material handling, etc.) to meet objectives.
  • Develop operating and maintenance procedures; assist with optimization of preventive maintenance.
  • Conduct accident investigations and periodic safety checks / inspections; work with the HSE Dept to take action and/or generate safety corrective action requests (SCARs) as appropriate.
  • Review customer specifications, sales orders, schedules, blend sheets, daily chemistry reports, etc. to issue schedules, changeover and chamber preparation checklists, and melt release forms to furnace crews.

Education & Experience

  • High School diploma or GED required
  • Supplemental college, technical, or supervisory training highly desired
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.  Ability and willingness to participate in holiday management coverage and weekend duty.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills; good writing skills.
  • Lead Operator experience is helpful; engineering or other technical education is helpful.
  • Ability to focus on details and understand the overall impact of events and decisions.
  • Strong leadership skills; demonstrated competency in the supervisory and technical skills required to fulfill the position’s responsibilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work with personnel at all organizational levels.
  • Good computer skills (MS Word and Excel).
