Summary

This position will serve as a change agent for the organization by leading, facilitating, and executing continuous improvement activities using a variety of skills including Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, and Statistical Process Control. As a result of such activities, the individual in this position will enable SMC New Hartford/Dunkirk to realize measurable, sustainable improvements from both a process performance and financial standpoint.

Essential Functions

  • Implement and direct the resources for Standardized Work Instructions and all key processes throughout each department.
  • Serves as back-up production supervisor approximately 10% of time. Responsibilities include carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.
  • Lead CI initiatives throughout New Hartford/Dunkirk.
  • Provide technical and engineering expertise to optimize tools, methods and resources to alleviate constraints to improve productivity.
  • Drives continuous improvement programs that minimize variability in process, methods and equipment performance; apply statistical methods to avoid defects, ultimately driving up yields.
  • Plan and Lead Kaizen events within operating departments to drive required improvements. Identify and prioritize improvement opportunities which have greatest potential for positively improving on delivered performance.
  • Lead Six Sigma project teams; designs, sets up, conducts and monitors controlled studies using data to build and validate models/proposals for improving operations.
  • Support other Dunkirk employees on Continuous Improvement Projects as required.
  • Plan and Lead FMEA teams.
  • Plan and Lead Waste (Lean) Workshops.
  • Develops value stream maps; generates charts, graphs and reports to demonstrate validity of proposed changes.
  • Develop a visual management system to include: standard work, 6S, quality, throughput, process control, variable cost & OEE.
  • Identify Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) for Dunkirk and apply SPC to monitor those KPI’s.
  • Travel as appropriate to other PCC locations for conferences, benchmarking activities, etc. to keep Dunkirk abreast of new technology and best practices.
  • Implement best practices at Dunkirk.
  • Act as a contact and facilitator of inter-company and intra-company initiatives.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred (engineering background highly desired).
  • 2-4 years related experience.
  • Ability and desire to manage in a 24 hour per day, 7 day per week manufacturing environment.
  • 6 Sigma Black Belt certification desired.

Special Skills

  • Success in leadership roles gained through work in a continuous process manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of Lean manufacturing skills set, Theory of Constraint, Six Sigma, and Value Stream mapping & OEE.                                                
  • Working knowledge of the Toyota Production System, oral communication skills sufficient to instruct, direct and resolve conflicts with and between employees, written skills for internal correspondence, writing or revising procedures, and reading comprehension sufficient to read, interpret and properly apply specifications and procedures to achieve desired outcomes.                
  • Experience in manufacturing changes in a suitable combination of ways, such as facility re-design, facility move, technology insertion, new product introduction, process revalidation, quality improvement.                
  • Ability to provide technical and professional leadership to the team.
  • Problem solving skills will include anticipating, surfacing consequential issues and acting with appropriate sense of urgency.               
  • Ability to work independently with minimum guidance to successfully lead projects.
