Founded in Jenkintown, PA in 1903 as Standard Pressed Steel Company, SPS Technologies continues to operate from the original 560,000 square foot facility.
SPS Technologies has been developing and manufacturing critical fasteners since the early days of aviation, working closely with its customers to meet the needs of an ever-changing industry.
Many of the materials, designs, and manufacturing practices that have become industry standards were pioneered by SPS Technologies. SPS Technologies continues to advance the materials, designs, and manufacturing practices of aerospace fasteners today to meet the unique needs of next generation vehicles and assembly techniques.
Lab Metallurgist – Assigned to the Quality organization. Responsible for the quality of incoming raw material and outgoing finished parts. Work with a wide range of metals including aluminum, titanium, carbon and alloy steel, iron-base-superalloys and nickel-base superalloys.  Work closely and support quality control processes in aircraft fastener manufacturing. Involves on-site observations of procedures to ensure that workers are adhering to best practices or collecting samples to test within a laboratory setting. Prepare reports and make presentations to decision-makers to support quality enhancement procedures. Revise internal Procedures and Instructions, as required.

  • Review new and revised external specifications used by SPS Technologies for business impact.

  • Participate in the NADCAP MTL task group.

  • Revise internal material and process specifications as necessary.

  • Participate on Special Process projects and audits (Heat Treat, NDT, Plating).

  • Participate in Continuous Improvement projects with other technical co-workers.

  • Coordinate external Round Robins via a Third Party on mechanical, metallurgical and corrosion testing of materials and fastener products.  

  • Coordinate internal Round Robins for technician proficiencies in testing and evaluating results.

  • Document lab failures and perform trend analyses.

  • Oversee raw material receipt discrepancies.

  • Complete Receiving Inspection Reports on non-conforming material.

  • Disposition alternate material requests from Purchasing.

  • Prepare and submit material Substitution FORMS to customers.

  • Lead multi-discipline team to disposition lab and NDT failures.

 

 


• Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science & Engineering or Technical Field required.
• Master’s Degree in related field preferred.
• 5-10 years metallurgy experience in Aeronautical fasteners manufacturing preferred.

  • Analytical skills – Six Sigma certification or similar problem-solving methodology.
  • Team coordination – Work with manufacturing teams to collaborate on process improvements and problem solving.
  • Problem-solving skills –Excellent problem-solving skills to determine innovative ways to improve processes and resolve issues related to manufacturing and design. Experience with 8 Disciplines methodology as defined in AS13000:2014 and or A3 TPS problem solving methodology preferred.
  • Communication skills – Establish and maintain daily oral and verbal communications with department teams. Write and or contribute to reports to support: RCCA, findings regarding customer related investigations, site process development projects.
